You've been told more protein is always better in midlife. New research says the opposite may be true — and the risk is concentrated exactly where most of that advice is aimed.
Meet Anita. She's 57. She trains four mornings a week, drinks a protein shake straight after, and makes sure lunch has chicken or eggs in it — because somewhere along the way she read that protein 'protects your muscle through menopause'. She's proud of this. It feels like the one part of her health she's actually got sorted.
Here's the part almost nobody tells her: the exact group being handed 'eat more protein' as blanket advice — women in midlife — is the exact group where new research is finding the sharpest cardiovascular risk from doing just that.
Not protein in general. Protein at the levels she, and thousands like her, have been told to aim for.
Where this advice actually came from.
Most of the high-protein targets doing the rounds online — 1.6 to 2.5 grams per kilogram of body weight a day — trace back to muscle-hypertrophy research: young, healthy bodies training hard to build muscle as fast as possible. That's a legitimate number for that specific goal. It was never tested as a cardiovascular safety threshold, and it was never run on a woman in her fifties whose oestrogen, lipid profile and blood vessels are all shifting under her at the same time.
Somewhere in translation from gym science to menopause advice, that distinction quietly disappeared.
The study that should have made headlines.
A 2026 UK Biobank study followed over 19,000 people for around 13 years. People eating high protein — 1.8 grams per kilogram a day or more — had a 21% higher risk of major cardiovascular events, 39% higher all-cause mortality, and a striking 73% higher risk of dying from cardiovascular disease, compared with those eating less.
Now the part that should stop you mid-sip of your next protein shake: that risk wasn't spread evenly. It was concentrated almost entirely in people over 55 — 36% higher event risk in that group specifically. Under 55, the same high intake showed no significant risk at all.
Read that again, slowly. It's not that protein is dangerous. It's that it appears to become a different substance, risk-wise, after 55 — and the marketing never got the memo.
What's actually happening inside the arteries.
Here's the plain-language version of the mechanism researchers at the University of Pittsburgh are pointing to. Certain protein — particularly the amino acid leucine, found in beef, eggs, dairy and most protein powders — can switch on immune cells that live inside artery walls. Once switched on, those cells behave a bit like overzealous repair crews: they start laying down material that hardens and narrows the artery over time. Do that repeatedly, for years, on top of a body already losing some of its natural vascular flexibility with age, and you get a slow, compounding problem that doesn't announce itself until it's serious.
The chain reaction
Each step triggers the next — breaking any link breaks the cycle
It's not a switch that flips at your 55th birthday. It's more likely that declining kidney function, changing vascular flexibility and shifting hormones all lower the threshold at which high protein stops being neutral and starts being a cost — which is exactly why a flat number, the same for a 30-year-old and a 60-year-old, was always going to fail someone.
The other half of the story: fat wasn't the villain either.
While protein was getting louder, fat was being quietly blamed for the wrong things. A 2022 meta-analysis pooling data from over 800,000 people found a strong, consistent protective link between olive oil and cardiovascular outcomes — not 'fat in moderation is fine', but a specific, measurable benefit. And only from extra-virgin and virgin olive oil, the polyphenol-rich kind — not the refined 'light' versions sold in the same aisle as a supposedly healthier swap.
Two food groups. Two decades of advice. Both slightly wrong, in opposite directions, for the same reason: nobody was asking what this body, at this age, actually needs.
Why 'i eat pretty clean' doesn't settle this.
Nutrition researchers use something called the Dietary Inflammatory Index — a way of scoring how much a day of eating leans anti-inflammatory or pro-inflammatory, since chronic low-grade inflammation is one of the quiet drivers of cardiovascular disease. Two women can both genuinely believe they're eating well and land in completely different places on that spectrum, because it was never about willpower or 'clean' — it's about pattern, source and timing, all at once.
This is why so many capable, health-conscious women feel blindsided. They did the reading. They followed the advice. The advice just wasn't written for the body they're in now.
So what do you do with this.
Not panic, and not swing to the opposite extreme and cut protein out. The useful next question isn't 'how much protein should I eat' — it's 'what is this protein actually doing for me, and at what cost, given my training, my kidneys, my bone density, my current pattern of eating.' Those aren't answers a headline, or a shake label, or even this article, can give you. They depend on you specifically.
